It's summer time!
And with the sun come the cold drinks, pool parties, barbeques and other social gatherings, But did you know that all these may take a toll on your teeth you don't take care of them properly? Keep reading to find out a few tips to keep your teeth healthy this summer!
1.- Beware of Cold Food and Drinks!
During the summer, it's common to crave cold foods and drinks to beat the heat. However, these icy treats can have an impact on our teeth.
When we consume cold items, the enamel of our teeth contracts, causing microscopic cracks that weaken the tooth's structure. Over time, this repeated contraction and expansion can result in permanent damage like chipped or cracked teeth. Additionally, drinking sugary or acidic beverages can increase the risk of tooth decay and erosion which cause sensitivity and pain.
To protect your pearly whites during summer months try not to chew on ice cubes or overly hard foods like popcorn kernels and opt for a straw when drinking sugary drinks to limit its contact with your teeth.
2.- Healthier Snacks
Another way to protect your teeth during the summer is to choose healthier snack options. Instead of reaching for sugary popsicles or ice cream, try snacking on fresh fruits like watermelon or frozen grapes. These options not only provide a refreshing and healthy treat, but they also contain natural sugars that are less harmful to your teeth. Also, drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help wash away any harmful bacteria or acids that may be lingering in your mouth.
3.-Guard your mouth with a mouth guard!
You should also be mindful of the activities you engage in. Swimming in pools or the ocean can expose your teeth to chlorine or saltwater, which can erode your enamel over time. To prevent this, make sure to rinse your mouth with fresh water after swimming and avoid keeping pool water in your mouth for extended periods of time.
Additionally, if you play sports or engage in other physical activities, consider wearing a mouthguard to protect your teeth from any potential impact or injury. By taking these simple steps, you can ensure that your teeth stay healthy and strong all summer long.
Finally, it's always important to maintain good oral hygiene habits by regularly brushing and flossing your teeth. Remember, taking care of your teeth during the summer months is just as important as any other time of the year. So, make sure to prioritize your oral health and enjoy the season with a healthy and happy smile!
5.- Do NOT open bottles with your teeth!
Opening bottle caps with your teeth can cause serious damage to your teeth, it can result in chipped or cracked teeth, and even worse, it can lead to tooth loss.
Using your teeth as a tool can also damage the enamel on your teeth, leaving them vulnerable to decay and other dental problems. The force required to remove a bottle cap is greater than what teeth are designed to handle, and it can cause fractures or chips in your teeth.
Protect your teeth and avoid unnecessary dental problems by using a bottle opener instead!
So there you have, 5 tips to keep your teeth healthy this summer. Protecting your teeth now will allow you to enjoy these summer activities, remember that prevention is the best care!
