COVID-19 tips for Maintaining Your Dental Health at Home

COVID-19 has infected millions of Americans and turned our everyday lives upside down. The panic and suffering that it has created are hard to imagine, making it one of the gravest pandemics known to mankind. This situation has forced us to stay indoors, with many service providers temporarily shutting down. This is especially true in the case of dental practices.

Most dental practices have closed for routine consultations and are offering only emergency treatment. During such a situation, it may be challenging to visit the dentist for your biannual dental visits. Hence, we urge our patients to practice optimum oral hygiene at home until dental practices open for regular consultations.

Brush and Floss Effectively

Brushing and flossing are the primary line of defense against the microbes in the mouth. It eliminates the majority of bacteria from the mouth, thereby keeping cavities and other oral infections at bay. Brush your teeth at least twice a day using a soft-medium bristled toothbrush and fluoride-rich toothpaste. Fluoride helps to keep the teeth strong and resist erosion by the tartar deposits.

Flossing is sometimes ignored, as we may not find the time to do it. However, this isn’t a healthy practice as getting rid of the adhered food particles and tartar between the teeth is crucial in preventing cavities and maintaining fresh breath. If you find it challenging to floss using a flossing string, you may also use a Waterpik. It is a device that produces a jet of water at high pressure, which, when directed at the teeth, helps to clean them by washing off the adhered debris.

Your Diet Matters

What you eat every day plays a significant role in your oral health. If your diet consists of a lot of sugary or sticky foods, the residue will be deposited on the teeth for a long time. This can act as food for the microbes in the mouth, leading to plaque and tartar deposits. Hence, limit the consumption of junk food, sweets, beverages, artificially colored foods, etc. and include a lot of fresh green veggies in your diet.

Take Care of Your Oral Restorations

Oral restorations such as dentures, bridges, veneers, crowns, etc. should be cared for well to ensure they do not get damaged. Avoid biting or chewing hard food substances, tearing open plastic bags or opening bottle caps with the teeth, etc. as it can damage the restorations.
